Digital Information and Signal Processor (DISP) is a distributed information and signal processing system designed for use with the .CRUNCH Grid Processing Network. The system facilitates analysis efforts by leveraging various Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms to support a broad spectrum of programs and requirements across Department of Defense, Federal, and Local law enforcement agencies. The feature algorithms currently implemented within the DISP system are targeted at performing real-time Voice Recognition (VR), Audio Processing (AP) analysis and general DSP. Description:

The DISP-VR/AP feature set provides highly reliable, real-time information on specifically who is speaking to whom and/or identifying a specific speaker amongst a large group of speakers. The DISP system takes into consideration and reports on characteristics of the speaker’s environment, physical and emotional conditions, time of occurrence, length of discussions, outgoing telephone numbers, probability of type I or type II error (miss or false positive), GPS coordinates, cell tower locations, etc. This particular feature set could be extended to include algorithms providing background detection, and speech, language, dialect, and sound recognition capabilities.

CEI engineers used the LabView software available from National Instruments to develop a host of Graphic User Interface (GUI) displays within the DISP system to assist the analyst in performing their analysis efforts and for displaying the results of those efforts.

With the development of new DSP add-on features and GUI’s, the core DISP system can support several additional signals intelligence disciplines such as Electronic Intelligence, Imagery analysis, and Communications Externals analysis. DISP features could also be expanded to include video processing, target identification, and target tracking functions. Using the DISP system for the analysis and processing of digital signals and information can provide invaluable, automated, fused, actionable intelligence to analysts supporting National and Homeland Security and Defense, and Federal and Local Law Enforcement efforts.

Through use of the .CRUNCH Grid Processing Network (also developed by CEI) the DISP system supports utilization by worker clients of any type: PCs, Cray, workstation, application specific hardware, etc. Application specific hardware could include resources like FPGAs, ASICs, etc. The system is also capable of receiving data from any type of sensor. The DISP system adds to the existing .CRUNCH capability (Stegi@Work) which was developed to assist with the accelerated detection of steganographic contents.
